Abhijit Roy’s next deals with women empowerment and existential crisis

We all are well aware of how tough life as a woman can be in India, the world's biggest democracy, even 55 years after Indira Gandhi made history as the country's first female prime minister in 1966, harassment is a part of almost every women’s day to day lives.
Yet, we speak about woman empowerment, gender equality on one hand and embrace patriarchy on the other hand. In rural areas, the burden of poverty weighs down heavier on girls and women in India than it does on the opposite sex.
Independent filmmaker Abhijit Roy who has made short films on women’s issues earlier is coming up with another short about a touching tale of oppressed women in our society. His previous films ‘Matrirupeno’ and ‘Agomonir Abogahon’ had received critical acclaim from all corners.
This time he sheds light on the difficulties a working woman face in our society and how women, generation after generation, sacrifice their dreams and promising career to be a homemaker. His story revolves around Aparna, the mother, and Anwesha, the daughter.
“It’s a tale of women empowerment and two women’s sacrifices and how they remain headstrong against all odds. Also, our urban life is slowly losing the essence of Bangaliana and the nuclear families slowly destroying our beliefs, our values and most importantly the significance of joint families in Bengali culture. I want to focus on this very essence of Bangaliana,” shares the director who plans to start shooting for the film from March-end.
