5 reasons any Bengali girl can relate to Alia Bhatt AKA Rani Chatterjee in ‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani’

Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt's ‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani’ has received much love from fans, after it hit the big screens on July 28. The Karan Johar directorial is indeed riding high on good reviews as the impressive box office run continues. Ranveer Singh has delivered one of his best performances as Rocky Randhawa ruling every frame with his naughtiness, charm and charismatic aura. But it’s Alia Bhatt who stole every Bengali’s heart playing a vibrant Rani and it’s no doubt one of the most mature acts of her career. Her natural act as self-assured Bengali lady Rani Chatterjee is a winner in every sense. Let’s take a quick look at why Bengalis have showered so much love on her character in ‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani’.

Versatile Acting Skills

Alia Bhatt has no doubt evolved as an actor. Her recent filmography proves her praiseworthy acting skills. Whether it’s ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’, ‘Raazi’, ‘Gully Boy’, ‘Highway’ or the latest ‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani’ – all are proof of her extraordinary talent and how she has matured as an actor. Alia’s ability to play diverse roles has resonated with the Bengali audience, who are well-known for their appreciation of nuanced performances. Bhatt's knack for bringing depth to her characters aligns perfectly with Bengali cinema's rich history of complex and layered storytelling. That’s why her portrayal of a Bengali TV news anchor Rani Chatterjee has received so much love from the Bengalis out there.

The well-educated, self-assured Bengali girl

Alia Bhatt shines as a fiery and self-assured Bengali girl and impresses in all those emotional scenes. Although a better command of the Bengali accent would have helped she still manages to win hearts with her authentic and relatable performance of a typical Bengali girl belonging to a progressive society. People simply loved the way Rocky (Ranveer Singh) meets the intellectual and cultured Rani, and despite their personalities being dramatically different, love blossoms over song, dance and hilarious one-liners.

Authenticity and relatability

Opposites always attract, and that’s how a super-energetic and colourful Punjabi boy Rocky and a well-educated Bengali television news anchor, Rani, fall for each other. As their families oppose the relationship, they devise a plan—to live in each other’s houses for three months before taking the relationship to the next level. Alia beautifully fits in the narrative with her charming yet headstrong personality and aptly resonates with every young independent Bengali girl’s dream of a life living on her own terms.

How the Ranveer-Alia jodi dazzles

‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani’ is indeed a complete family entertainer full of impressive comebacks, as we’ll also get to see Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt sharing the screen once again. Their outstanding chemistry became the talk of the town ever since the promotional campaign started reminding us of their last blockbuster ‘Gully Boy’. In Karan Johar’s film, the pair is introduced in entirely different avatars and it’s as fabulous as before if not more! Alia’s Bengali character is all about embracing inclusivity just like any Bong girl these days see her life.

Cute Bengali accent

Ever since the video of Alia Bhatt trying to greet all with her cute, innocent Bengali accent at the Kolkata event has gone viral people have showered love on the actress. No doubt she has matured as an actor but at the same time Alia has managed to hold on to the cuteness of her early days. During the Kolkata promotional event, Alia put in a valiant effort to greet the media in Bengali. She did stop and fumble a couple of times but finally floored the audience with her fairly smart Bengali diction. She said, “Nomoshkar Kolkata. Kemon acho Shobai? Tomader shobaike onek dhonyobad ekhane ashar jonyo. Aaj ami khub excited. Asha kori tomader shobar amar notun gaan Dhindora khub bhalo laagbe (Hello Kolkata. How are you all? I thank you all for coming here today. I am very excited. I hope you all will love the new song, Dhindora.),” in her complete speech and it simply won everyone’s heart and at the same time, upped the excitement bar among fans to see her as a Bengali girl in the film.
