When Satyajit Ray dropped Hindi ‘Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne’ Midway!

We all love Satyajit Ray’s cult classic ‘Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne’. But did you know Satyajit Ray reportedly had to drop the idea to make a Hindi version of ‘Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne’ midway following a rift with the producers? The 1969 fantasy-adventure film still remains the biggest hit in his filmmaking career. Recently during a media interaction Gulzar revealed he always dreamed of working with Ray, and the two even planned to remake ‘Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne’ in Hindi. Gulzar started working on the script but Ray later shelved the project. The ‘Aandhi’ director felt really upset with the decision as he was keen to work with him. Interestingly, Gulzar has translated the original text of ‘Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne’, written by Satyajit’s grandfather Upendrakishore Ray Chowdhury, for an animated film ‘Goopi Gawaiya Bagha Bajaiya’. The film directed by Shilpa Ranade has been lapped up by ones and all. Gulzar has also admitted his involvement in this animation film has somehow fulfilled his wish partially at least.
