Hemanta Mukhopadhyay was among the very few artists in the capacity of a singer, music director, composer and a film producer who juggled between the worlds of Bengali and Hindi films with elan. Even 30 years after his demise, the music maestro’s sonorous voice still lends nothing less than magic a carefree romanticism and catapults before us his tall, dhoti-shirt clad figure. On his death anniversary here’s an interesting story about Hemanta Mukhopadhyay which not many people know about.
Hemanta Mukhopadhyay’s father wanted him to become an engineer and had enrolled him in the Bengal Technical Institute of Jadavpur. However, he was destined to be a singer and a music composer of repute. So, he dropped out of the institution to pursue music professionally.
The music legend first sang for All India Radio in 1935. His first
gramophone record
was under the banner of
Columbia Records
with two songs ‘Janite Jodi Go Tumi’ and ‘Bolo Go Bolo More’. Hemanta’s first film song was for Nimai Sanyasi in 1941.
