Did you know Srijit Mukherji received death threat for his National Award-winning film ‘Gumnaami’?
Srijit Mukherji’s ‘Gumnaami’ has won the Best Bengali Feature Film and Best Adapted Screenplay awards at the 67th National Awards. The awards were finally presented to the winners on Monday at Bigyan Bhaban in a prestigious ceremony. But did you know it wasn’t a cakewalk for the acclaimed filmmaker to make the film? He even received death threats before the release of the film in 2019. The film’s release was marred by controversies one after another. Srijit had to face the wrath of many since ‘Gumnaami’ involves the national hero Netaji Subhas Chandra. Srijit’s ‘Gumnaami’, starring Prosenjit Chatterjee as Netaji, is based on the Mukherjee Commission Hearings which happened from 1999 to 2005 where the three theories about Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose's death were discussed and debated. It is a dramatization of the hearings where an investigative journalist supporting the Gumnaami Baba theory locks horns with the official lawyer who supports the plane crash theory. In their clash, the Death in Russia theory also comes up. The winners’ list of the 67th National Awards was announced on March 22 in 2019. The presentation ceremony was supposed to be held on May 03 last year but due to the pandemic it was postponed and the winners had to wait for one more year. Besides, ‘Gumnaami’, Kaushik Ganguly’s ‘Jyeshthoputro’ also bagged awards for Best Screenplay (Original) and Best Background Music (Prabuddha Banerjee).
