A documentary on the India's guru-shishya tradition

Subimal Sengupta’s upcoming documentary, Parampara, aims to unveil a very rich legacy of knowledge. It will highlight the ancient Guru-Shishya parampara in the Indian orthodox system of philosophical schooling, which in turn, is a very practical discipline of wholesome education and character building process. It’s based on the traditional Vedic philosophical thoughts that originated on the Indian subcontinent.
The aim of the documentary is to conserve this age-old legacy and aid its expansion. Entirely dissociated with mainstream education, these schools were codified during the mediaeval period. The tols or Vedic pathshalas all over India are still striving to preserve this Vedic tradition and keep Sanskrit alive to create the future torchbearers of Vedic knowledge and culture. These schools embody the true cultural legacy of India, by the way of interpretation and establishment of the authority of Vedas by unquestionable faith, ritualistic practices and performance of fire sacrifice or yagna as prescribed in the Vedas in order to sustain the natural activities of this universe under a well-calculated and disciplined curriculum, eventually leading to Brahmagyana.
A small team of independent filmmakers and technicians have collaborated to make this self-funded film, which is being shot at various locations across India, including Varanasi and parts Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Bihar and Assam. While Partha Sarathi Ray is the DoP, Sumit Mukherjee is the associate director. The research for the film was done by Partha, Subimal and Sumon Maity, while the music has been designed by Sujit Kumar Mukherjee, Abhishek Das and Siddhartha Benerjee.
