Sonar Kellay Jawker Dhan

Inspired by Hemendrakumar Roy’s beloved detective duo Bimal and Kumar, the Jawker Dhan series returns with Parambrata Chattopadhyay reprising his role as Bimal and Gaurab Chakraborty as Kumar. They’re joined by Koel Mallick as Dr. Rubi Chatterjee — introduced in Sagardwipe Jawker Dhon as Bimal’s love interest — who plays a central role as the story unfolds.
This time, the trio travels to Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, drawn into a new mystery involving Mukul Dhar (Suprobhat Das), the once-young boy from Satyajit Ray’s Sonar Kella. Now an adult, Mukul returns to the Golden Fort to confront secrets from his past life.
The production design adds authenticity: well-crafted sets, effective props, and serviceable CGI help sustain the film’s intrigue. Jaisalmer’s majestic fort becomes a character in itself, beautifully captured and enriched by Bengali folklore and bratakatha. A clever nod to the Bengali-speaking locals — a byproduct of Ray-inspired tourism — adds a meta layer of charm.
Action is plentiful, though some scenes could have been tighter. Still, the chemistry between Bimal and Kumar anchors the film. Fans of Sonar Kella will appreciate the scattered clues and Easter eggs — thoughtful tributes for Ray aficionados.
Parambrata is convincing as the evolved Bimal, shedding his earlier misogyny with charm. Gaurab Chakraborty brings a grounded, humorous energy as Kumar. Suprobhat Das is a standout as the adult Mukul, effortlessly commanding key scenes. Saheb Chatterjee is pitch-perfect as the suave antagonist Sunil Bhargava, while Koel Mallick, returning to a substantial role post-Mitin Mashi, lends quiet strength to Rubi.
Though the plot veers into implausibility in the second half and ends predictably, the film still works as a family-friendly adventure — nostalgic, visually rich, and infused with a hint of mysticism.
