Story: Famous film actress Neha Dey (Rimjhim Gupta) and her husband Sameer (Joyjit Banerjee) are terrified when their little daughter Shona (Suhina Roy) turns extremely violent on her birthday. The film then goes on to unfold a tale of horror, deceit and murder.

There are gripping horror films and there are those super clichéd ones that make you want to get the hell out of the theatre before the ghost of boredom starts tormenting you. Maya falls in the latter category.

And the shoddy direction makes it even worse. It seems the director Raj Kumar Behl is satisfied too easily when it comes to extracting juice from the characters. And an obvious after-effect is dismal acting from most of the characters, though Sayantani, who plays TV journalist Rhea Sen, and Abir Goswami, who plays her boyfriend, ACP Ayan Biswas, are much better than the rest. Even child actress Suhina Roy (Shona) seems pretty much in character and death row convict Shekhar Bose (Bharat Kaul) also shines in a few sequences. But the chemistry between Neha and her husband seems like a reaction gone wrong. They look like guests in their own house most of the time, not to mention the cold acting.

Music-wise, there’s not much to say, but a sequence where convict Shekhar sings a tragic melody behind bars is just too ’60-ish to find place in a film today. It may be an emotional number, but it’s also the real horror sequence in the film — the way it jumps at you from nowhere!

As for the storyline, all I can say is that it could have been so much better had the director not set his mind on making the whole film look like one of those claws-and-ketchup television horror shows, which you watch if you have absolutely nothing else to do.

In a nutshell, Maya is an experience I’d love to forget. But then again, it’s a free country. Go and watch it if you have no options left.
