Can piracy be used as an alibi for flops?

KOLKATA: More than a year ago, Amitabh Chakraborty, director of 'Cosmic Sex', had released by movie online. Yet, the director is now planning to release the movie online. Sudeshna Roy and Abhijit Guha’s 'Teen Yaari Katha' released in theatres six years after it got pirated online. Movies on television are screened much after they have been shown on the big screen. If the content manages to touch the audience, the TRP for such films is always high. While piracy is illegal and should be stopped, can it be held as the only reason for flops?

Directors share their views:

Amitabh Chakraborty

Today’s audience make informed choices across different platforms. Each platform also has its own audience. They are the ones who contribute to the collections of a movie. Piracy can’t be used as an alibi if a film flops.

Sudeshna Roy

Our film, “Teen Yaari Katha”, was on YouTube for six years. Yet, when it released in 2012, it ran for five weeks. The satellite got sold and got fantastic rating on television.

Atanu Ghosh
I have never heard of such an alibi. The box office decides the financial fate of a film based on some statistics whereas the actual number of people watching the pirated version is never authenticated.

Sekhar Das

Piracy does harm movies. But it isn’t a major issue anymore. From the time television started buying rights of movies, I don’t get hurt that much.
