This reboot is directed by Yasuyuki Ōishi (Stars Align, Narenare -Cheer for you!) at Studio KAI, with Fumito Yamada (Hell’s Paradise) serving as assistant director. The script is helmed by Yoshiki Ōkusa (Butt Detective, The Banished Former Hero), and character designs are being handled by Yū Yoshiyama, known for their work on Dragon Ball Super and Gundam: The Witch From Mercury. Music is composed by Evan Call, whose emotional scores in Violet Evergarden and My Happy Marriage have earned high praise.
A supernatural tale with heart
The reboot revisits the ghost-filled town of Domori, where inexplicable paranormal phenomena threaten the peace. Enter Nube—the only psychic teacher in Japan. Gentle, goofy, and brave, Nube hides a terrifying secret: his left hand is possessed by a powerful demon. With the safety of his students on the line, he confronts evil spirits, haunted mysteries, and ancient yokai in a high-stakes occult action story that balances scares with sentiment.
Manga legacy and new adventures
Created by Shō Makura and Takeshi Okano, the original Hell Teacher Nūbē manga ran from 1993 to 1999 in Weekly Shonen Jump, selling over 29 million copies. The series has inspired a 1996-97 TV anime, multiple OVAs and films, and even a 2014 live-action drama.
The franchise continues to thrive with a new manga series titled Jigoku Sensei Nūbē Kai launching on May 2, 2025 in Saikyō Jump. This new storyline sees Nube crossing time and space to rescue his students from a terrifying world of ghost stories. A special one-shot prequel manga was also released on April 16 and is available for free online until June 3.
