TMC, CPM oppose poll observer

KOLKATA: The

West Bengal

CM said her party would go to Election Commission over its decision to appoint former BSF DG K K Sharma as the central police observer for the state.


“We hold the EC in high esteem. However, we have reasons to believe that it is being misled by the Union home ministry. Why else would a person who had been seen publicly in uniform attending an RSS meeting be charged with overseeing central forces during polls,” Mamata Banerjee said.

The CPM too has written to the poll panel on this.

Banerjee also cited the example of another retired home ministry official, the husband of BJP candidate Srirupa Mitra Chowdhury, who is working on deputation in North Bloc and has been apparently tasked to oversee central force movements.
