Bengal star MPs lag behind in Parliament

Stars may shine the campaign trail of the Trinamool Congress in Bengal, but the performance of the star MPs from Bengal in the lower house of the Parliament is quite dismal.
Leading the list is Dev aka Deepak Adhikary, whose attendance is only 11 per cent. He participated in 2 debates and raised three questions. Other star MPs like Sandhya Roy (who is not contesting this time), Satabdi Roy, Tapas Pal (who is also not contesting) and Moon Moon Sen aka Sreemati Dev Varma have better attendance but poor in debate participation and raising questions.
Sandhya Roy raised only 3 questions, participated in no debate. Satabdi Roy took part in 4 debates and raised only 2 questions. Tapas Pal in his truncated attendance (because of his under trial imprisonment) took part in 8 debates and raised 7 questions. Moon Moon Sen, who is the most articulate in the star group, surprisingly, participated only in 1 debate, without raising a single question, revealed PRS Legislative Research, which tracks the performance of the Parliamentarians.
The MPs from Bengal on an average fell short in passing the performance test in the parliament with flying colours. While national attendance average is 80%, Bengal MPs have clocked 65% attendance. Bengal’s debate average is 34.4, vis-à-vis national average of 67.1. Bengal has an average of 94 questions while the national average being 293. From Kolkata’s three constituencies, three S – Subrata, Sudip and Sugata have mixed performance records. As per figure compiled by PRS Legislative Research, Subrata Bakshi, Trinamool’s Congress’s general secretary and Bengal president of the party, who has opted out of the Loksabha fray this time, as an MP from Kolkata South has only 24% attendance, without any participation in debate or raising a single question. Sudip Bandyopadhyay, the MP from North Kolkata participated in 55 debates during his 60 % attendance. Sugata Basu, MP from Jadavpur, who was perhaps one of the best orators in the parliament, participated in 31 debates, raised only 3 questions.
Sugata Roy, a war-veteran in the parliament from Bengal raised most of the questions among Bengal’s MPs – 573. He also participated in maximum number of debates – 227. Abhijit Mukherjee, Congress MP from Jangipur and son of former President of India Pranab Mukherjee clocked highest attendance (96%), raising 174 questions and participating in 33 debates.
