Election Commission gag order ends, Maneka Gandhi files papers

LUCKNOW: Union minister and

BJP nominee Maneka Gandhi

filed her nomination papers from Sultanpur

Lok Sabha

constituency on Thursday. The gag order of Election Commission on Gandhi had ended on Thursday morning.


Clad in a yellow saree, Maneka performed a 'pooja' at her rented house in Sultanpur before embarking on a road show amid chants of 'Jai Shri Ram' and 'Jai Hanuman' by her supporters.

As per the affidavit filed by Maneka, she owns property worth nearly 50 crore, including over 24 crore of movable assets. In 2014, when Maneka contested from Pilibhit, she had disclosed net worth of around Rs 37 crore while in 2009 elections it was Rs 17.5 crore.

The affidavit, signed as Maneka Sanjay Gandhi, states that her annual taxable income increased from around Rs 1.6 crore in 2013-14 to around Rs 2.32 crores in 2017-18.

Maneka has stated in the affidavit that she owns a flat in Jor bagh area of New Delhi. She had brought the 5,000 sq feet flat in 2005 and its value is pegged around Rs 20 crore. She has no criminal case pending against her.

Maneka had been barred from making any speech and campaigning in any form for 48 hours following her remarks on Muslim votes.
