Firm in the saddle, TRS aims for record victory margin in Medak elections
HYDERABAD: Voters of Medak Lok Sabha constituency have given a Prime Minister, a chief minister to Telangana, a Union minister and a speaker in the undivided AP Assembly. Former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi won this seat in 1980.
Though the Congress has won this constituency nine times since 1957, it failed to win in the last 20 years. While the BJP won it in 1999, it has been TRS all the way since 2004. Former speaker Baga Reddy of the Congress, ex-Union minister A Narendra, chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, Congress star campaigner M Vijayashanti, all have won from Medak.
While K Prabhakar Reddy of the TRS is seeking reelection with an eye on getting the highest majority in the state, it has to be seen up to what extent Gali Anil Kumar and Raghunandan Rao, the Congress and BJP candidates respectively, would be able to give a fight to the TRS which has almost turned Medak into its fortress.
TRS won six of the seven Assembly segments in the December-2018 polls and got a total majority of 3.5 lakh votes. Chief minister K Chandrashekhar Rao broke the over three-decades old record of ex-PM Indira Gandhi by winning the seat with a majority of 3.97 lakh votes in the 2014 election. In 1980, Indira Gandhi had won with a margin of 2 lakh votes over her nearest rival. KCR later vacated the seat and Kotha Prabhakar Reddy too won by a majority of 3.61 lakh votes.
In the Assembly polls, Congress managed to win only the Sanga Reddy segment. T Jayaprakash Reddy alias Jagga Reddy won the Sanga Reddy seat with a margin of 2,000-odd votes.
TRS star campaigner and former minister T Harish Rao said while the victory of the ruling party is a foregone conclusion, they were working to secure highest majority from Medak.
