Tamil Nadu parties trade charges at meet called by EC
At an Election Commission meeting with representatives of various political parties, leaders of major fronts levelled charges against each other for violation of the model code of conduct. Election Commissioners Ashok Lavasa and Sushil Chandra interacted with political leaders. CEC Sunil Arora, who was scheduled to come, cancelled his visit at the last minute.
The EC had invited representatives of 10 recognised parties for the meeting. Leaders met the Election Commissioners separately and presented their petitions.
While the AIADMK levelled charges against its arch rival DMK, the DMK in turn questioned the Election Commission as to why only its leaders were being targeted by the I-T and not those of the ruling party. “We fear that the teachers, who went on strike last year, will not be able to vote in the elections as papers for postal votes were not given to them on the last day of training. Instead, they have been told to collect papers for postal votes from the district education officers concerned,” said DMK Rajya Sabha MP R S Bharathi.
“We have proof to show money is being distributed by AIADMK ministers in several constituencies. Will the I-T department take action against all those ministers?,” asked Bharathi. “We have asked the EC to disqualify DMK Vellore candidate if there is proof to show that the money seized (₹11.53 crore from a godown) belonged to the party and it was to be used for distributing to voters,” said state fisheries minister D Jayakumar. The AIADMK also complained that DMK president M K Stalin was raising the Kodanad issue against the CM despite court barring him.
Congress representatives complained against chief electoral officer Satyabrata Sahoo for not replying to their calls. “We have made more than 100 calls and not even one call was answered. As a CEO he must be independent and talk to all parties,” said Congress representative Karate Thiagarajan.
