TRICHY: Election officials prevented DMK and AIADMK from campaigning at Vengamedu in Karur town on Tuesday.

Karur returning officer T Anbalagan issued order cancelling the permission given to both the parties after their cadre clashed near the campaign venue on Tuesday afternoon.

Some party workers sustained injuries and were rushed to the nearby hospitals and police took control of the spot following the incident.

Additional police force was deployed around the campaign venue in large numbers to initiate arrest if anyone intended to approach the venue of the poll campaign.

AIADMK candidate M Thambi Durai was unhappy with the Election Commission for asking the party to campaign at the venue from noon till 2 pm. He had sought permission till 6pm starting from 4pm -- the slot given to INC candidate S Jothimani to hold the campaign.

Transport minister M R Vijayabhaskar on Monday approached the collector seeking permission for Thambidurai from 4 – 6 pm.

Jothimani on Tuesday morning alleged that the collector had threatened to disqualify her. Responding to her allegation, Anbalagan said that there was no safety for him as DMK men threatened him.
