Telugu Desam Party (TDP)

The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) is a regional political party rooted in Andhra Pradesh. Its inception dates back to March 1982, credited to Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao (widely known as NTR), a prominent figure who had previously earned fame as a star and director in the Telugu-language film industry of the state.

The party aimed to safeguard the political, economic, social, and cultural foundations of Telugu-speaking people.

The TDP's national political performance closely reflected its fortunes in Andhra Pradesh. During the 1984 Lok Sabha elections, the party secured an impressive 30 seats. However, its presence diminished drastically to a mere 2 seats in the 1989 polls.

Over the next few years, the party showed some recovery, winning 13 and 16 seats in the 1991 and 1996 parliamentary contests, respectively, before reducing to 12 seats in 1998.

In the subsequent year, the TDP made a remarkable comeback, garnering 29 seats and earning the distinction of being the fourth largest party in the chamber. During this period, it extended outside support to the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) coalition, backing the NDA's governance without becoming an official member. This collaboration lasted from 1998 to 2004.

However, after the 2004 Lok Sabha elections, the party faced a setback, managing to win only five seats. Consequently, it decided to sever ties with the NDA and instead joined the "Third Front," an alliance of leftist parties formed to counter the Congress and the BJP.

In the 2009 elections, the TDP made a modest gain, increasing its seat total to six.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, YSR Congress decimated the TDP headed by N Chandrababu Naidu, who became the first chief minister of the state after it was bifurcated to carve out Telangana five years ago.

The party's performance was disappointing, as it managed to secure only 3 seats.

Naidu's aspiration was to emerge as a kingmaker at the national level by forging an anti-BJP alliance in case of a fragmented mandate but he failed.

Meanwhile, ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the TDP, led by Chandrababu Naidu, who had previously left the alliance in protest against the Centre's denial of special status to Andhra Pradesh, is now poised to rejoin the governing coalition.

As per reports, BJP is favourably inclined to overtures from TDP which, at the receiving end of Andhra CM Jaganmohan Reddy's dominance on home turf, is keen to return to the fold.

The meeting between Union home minister Amit Shah, BJP president JP Nadda and TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu in the first week of June set off the buzz of an alliance between the BJP and TDP before 2024.

The return of TDP leader N Chandrababu Naidu, who had left NDA earlier too but returned to the fold ahead of the 2014 polls, will require BJP to do a political tightrope walk.
