BHOPAL: The Election Commission on Saturday ordered repolling in Demha polling booth in Sidhi parliamentary constituency apparently because officials allowed voting without checking ID cards.
Sidhi went to the polls on April 29 along with five other parliamentary constituencies. Joint chief electoral officer Sandip Yadav said, “Repolling will be held between 7am and 6pm on May 6 in polling booth number 195, named Demha.”
Sources said the repolling was ordered on the basis of the EC observer’s report.
Demha polling booth has close to 800 voters, of whom more than 600 voted — an impressive turnout of 83%.
‘ID cards were not properly checked’
But the observer noted that the presiding officers did not properly check identity cards, said sources.
Voters have to produce either the EPIC or any other valid ID card and the second presiding officer notes down the type of card used along with the voter slip that is issued by EC.
However, in Demha, the observer noticed that though the register said everyone used their voter ID card, no EPIC number was noted down. It was only written that EPIC was used, said sources.
