Lok Sabha elections 2019: 6.7 lakh names struck off voter rolls

With elections for the 26 Lok Sabha seats in

Gujarat

just a few days away, it’s time to check whether your name is on the voters list, to avoid any unpleasant surprises on voting day, April 23.

According to official records of the Gujarat chief electoral officer (CEO), a total of 6.7 lakh voters have been deleted from list in the last summary revision by EROs (electoral registration officers), for reasons such as having shifted residence or others. The most names were deleted from the voter rolls in Ahmedabad and Surat districts, according to records from the CEO’s office.

In 2014, 9.5 lakh voters had been struck off the rolls, while in 2019 the number is close to 6.7 lakh. Some 4 lakh names were deleted earlier, and 2.7 lakh names were removed in the latest revision.

EROs (electoral registration officers) have the power to delete the names of voters not found at the addresses mentioned. Any other person can also apply for deletion of the name of a person who has died or has shifted.

Gujarat CEO S Murali Krishna said, "In 2019, a total 10.72 lakh new voters have been added. Around 4 lakh voter names have been deleted for various reasons. After the latest round, the number of names deleted is around 6.7 lakh.

After 2015, we have stopped suo-moto deletion of voter names and do so only if someone has filed Form 7 for deletion. Form 7 can be filled by any person, even a neighbour. The principal reasons for deletion of voters names are death and them having permanently shifted."
