Meghalaya assembly election results 2023: NPP wins 19 seats, ahead in 6

SHILLONG: The ruling National People's Party (NPP) in Meghalaya registered its victory in 19 seats, and was leading in six other constituencies, the Election Commission said on Thursday as the counting of votes for the assembly elections was under way.

The NPP retained Rongara Siju seat as its candidate Rakkam A Sangma won by a margin of over 3,000 votes.

Chief minister Conrad K Sangma's brother James Pangsang K Sangma suffered a setback as he lost the Dadenggre constituency to TMC candidate Rupa M Marak by a narrow margin of just seven votes.

The UDP won 11 seats. The BJP won two seats and the Congress registered victory in five seats. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) bagged four seats while leading in one seats.

The Voice of the People Party (VPP) was leading in four seats.

The TMC opened its account by winning the Rajabala seat as its candidate Mizanur Rahman Kazi defeated NPP candidate Abdus Saleh after giving a neck-to-neck fight. He won by a thin margin of just 10 votes.

In the South Tura constituency, chief minister Conrad K Sangma was ahead, while his deputy, Prestone Tynsong, was leading in the Pynursla constituency.

The state of Meghalaya has a total of 60 seats available for polling. However, the election proceedings for the Sohiong constituency were postponed due to the unfortunate demise of one of the candidates.
