Madhya Pradesh assembly elections: Why is it crucial? And who are the key candidates to look for?

The eagerly anticipated Madhya Pradesh assembly election of 2023 is scheduled for Friday, November 17th, with polling set to commence at 7 am across all 230 seats of the Madhya Pradesh assembly.

In the upcoming election, significant players include the incumbent Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress, Samajwadi Party (SP), Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), and Communist Party of India (Marxist). However, the primary battleground in the Hindi heartland is expected to be mainly between the BJP and the Congress.

The Madhya Pradesh Assembly election holds significance as it occurs just a few months before the 2024 Lok Sabha election. ​Madhya Pradesh contributes 29 Members of Parliament to the total of 543.

Prominent figures vying for electoral success in the upcoming Madhya Pradesh assembly election 2023 include several notable candidates representing both the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

From the Congress party, the list features former chief minister Kamal Nath, known for his extensive political experience and leadership roles. Additionally, Vikram Mastal and Govind Singh, recognized for their contributions within the Congress party, are also key contenders.

On the BJP front, the formidable lineup includes Kailash Vijayvargiya, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, the former chief minister of Madhya Pradesh. Joining them are Narottam Mishra and Ambrish Sharma.

In the Chhindwara Assembly constituency, the ex-chief minister of Madhya Pradesh, Kamal Nath, is directly competing against the BJP's Vivek Bunty Sahu. Kamal Nath had secured victory in the Assembly seat during the 2019 by-election.

In the Indore-1 Assembly constituency, the BJP's Kailash Vijayvargiya is contesting against Congress' Sanjay Shukla. Although Sanjay Shukla emerged victorious in the 2018 election, the constituency was traditionally held by the saffron party.

In the Budhni constituency, the BJP has nominated the current chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, who is being challenged by Congress candidate Vikram Mastal. Shivraj Singh Chouhan emerged victorious in the 2008 election in this seat.

Union minister Prahlad Singh Patel is the BJP's candidate for Narsingpur, with the aim of appealing to the OBC population. Lakhan Singh Patel from the Congress is set to challenge him in Narsingpur.
