In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Bharatiya Janata Party leader Jigajinagi Ramesh Chandappa had won from Bijapur Lok Sabha seat with a solid margin of 25,8038 votes by defeating Dr Sunita Devanand Chavan of the Janata Dal (Secular).

Previously, the constituency was known as Bijapur constituency which was readjusted in 2008 on the implementation of the Delimitation Commission of 2002.

In the 2018 assembly elections, Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Basanagoud Patil won the seat by defeating Abdul Hameed Mushrif of the Congress by a margin of over 6,000 votes.

In the 2013 elections, Congress candidate Makbul S Bagawan had won the seat, wresting it from BJP.

In the 2008 elections, it was won by Bharatiya Janata Party's Appasaheb Mallappa Pattanashetti.

This year, the contest is again between BJP and Congress.

Bharatiya Janata Party will field incumbent MLA Basangouda Patil Yatnal. He will face Congress's Abdul Hameed Mushrif.
