SHIMLA: The Himachal Pradesh police during a checking in Damtal area of Nurpur police district in Kangra district have seized Rs 2 crore cash from a SUV bearing the registration number of Chandigarh on Saturday.

This is the biggest ever cash haul in the assembly elections in Himachal Pradesh.

After making the seizure police deposited the cash in the treasury. In a bid to stop the flow of illicit cash into Himachal Pradesh from outside for the assembly elections, police have intensified vigil along the entry points of state. Police have also seized over Rs 23 lakh from different parts of Sirmaur district.

DGP Sanjay Kundu said that on Saturday, police had laid a naka at Interstate border check post Toki under Damtal police station when a SUV bearing registration number of Chandigarh was intercepted and checked. On the checking of the vehicle cash worth Rs 2 crore was recovered from Harshitinder Pal Singh a resident of Sector 33 Chandigarh, he said.

Kundu said that a flying and static surveillance team was called on the spot for further process and seizure report was prepared and the recovered cash amount was deposited in treasury at Dharamshala.

Sanjay Kundu said that after seizing Rs 2 crore cash, the police team has deposited the entire cash in treasury at Dharamshala. He said that matter has been forwarded to Income Tax and other competent authorities for further action. He also congratulated SP of Nurpur police district Ashok Rattan and his team for making the highest recovery in the history of Himachal Pradesh elections.

In another incident, Sirmaur police during a checking at Yamunaghat barrier of Paonta Sahib recovered Rs 8.52 lakh from a car bearing the registration number of Haryana coming from Uttarakhand side on Saturday. During the checking cash was found stashed in the dashboard of the car and on the backside of the driver's seat cover. Another seizure of Rs 3 lakh and Rs 12 lakh was made by police teams in Sirmaur district from areas bordering with Uttarakhand.

For the strict implementation of guidelines issued by the Election Commission, in Himachal Pradesh 238 flying squad teams and 238 static surveillance teams have been deployed.
