Elvis Gomes
, a former bureaucrat, is Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) convenor for the state and chief ministerial candidate forGoa elections 2017
.- While BJP has decided to field the sitting MLA, Subhash Rajan Naik, in Cuncolim in South Goa, a multi-cornered fight has been laid out between him, Congress's Clafasio Dias, AAP’s Elvis Gomes, Goa Vikas Party's (GVP) John Inacio Monteiro, Shiv Sena's (SS) Devendra Dessai and two independents — Alemao and Derick Dias.
- Gomes shares a good rapport with villagers across the spectrum of religion and caste, and is expected to rake in a sizeable number of Dessai votes, which otherwise would have gone to BJP. Besides, he will get the major chunk of Christian 'gaunkar' votes, which at the last hustings had gone to the BJP. In Cuncolim, the 'gaunkarponn' sentiment is very strong and was one of the reasons for Alemao losing in 2012.
- Gomes was the Inspector General Prisons and Urban Development Secretary in Goa when he took voluntary retirement in 2016
- There is a strong feeling that AAP may emerge as an underdog in these elections and Gomes being announced as AAP's chief ministerial candidate has furthered his vote value.
- Gomes holds an image of an anti-corruption crusader in Goa, and AAP had also started a mass public movement against corruption in 2013.
- Gomes was summoned by Anti-Corruption Bureau in December 2016 and was booked, along with the then chairman of Goa Housing Board, in connection with a scam which allegedly took place between 2007-2011. Gomes, who was managing director of Goa Housing Board, and Halarnkar who was its chairman, allegedly acquired 30,000 square metres land in Margao town, changed its 'zoning' (reservation) to residential which would have increased its market value, and later gave it back to the owner. A complaint was filed by the BJP-led state government in June 2016.
