Kolkata: The detective department may take over the investigations into the post-poll violence in Kolkata. Probe has revealed that organized gangs from Haridevpur and Sonarpur were involved in the attacks across Behala, Gangulybagan and Bagha Jatin.
Two fresh incidents were reported from Rajabazar and Tiljala on Friday , including the attack on the office of the deputy mayor. The incidents took place on a day when the central forces -barring the 78 companies manning the EVMs kept at strong rooms - left the state.
At Rajabazar, the office of KMC deputy mayor and Trinamool leader Iqbal Ahmed was vandalized by unknown men.Ahmed said it was the handiwork of extortionists against whom he had been leading a campaign. He said police from Narkeldanga did not respond despite repeated calls. Police refuted the charge. The opposition claimed that the incident was a fallout of an internal feud within the ruling party involving one Pappu, considered close to Beliaghata MLA Paresh Pal.
In Tiljala, police recovered 28 country-made bombs from an abandoned area.Police had to call the bomb disposal squad.
Meanwhile, police believe that the attacks at Jayashree Park and Senhati in Behala we re led by gangs close to Sk Vinod and Nanti -both major operators in south Kolkata.Though Vinod is now in jail, CPM alleges that his son was leading the attacks. Opposition also claimed that Trinamool councillor Ragunath Patra led some attacks. Patra has rubbished the charge. Police claimed that apart from Behala-based criminal Bhaskar, they are also looking for Paresh Patra -the main accused in the Haridevpur case where a kid was beaten up by a mob. Mayor Sovan Chatterjee said: “I have asked the police commissioner to ensure a free and fair probe.“
