Kolkata: As the Election Commission had categorically asked Bharati Ghosh not to leave Kolkata, the CID special superintendent chose to play by the rule book.
She stepped into CID's Bhawani Bhawan headquarters around noon and stayed there nearly half-an-hour and then left. Both her entry and exit were duly recorded in the CCTV cameras installed outside - least the EC seeks proof.
Earlier, the opposition had alleged that Ghosh had been to Cooch Behar as a part of Mamata Banerjee's entourage. According to the complaint, she had stayed in a five-star resort in Chalsa. Later, EC had asked the state home secretary Malay De to investigate the claims.
The DG (Crime) Surajit Kar Purakayastha who reported back to EC on Ghosh, alleged that she was all along in Kolkata. But by staying away from office, Ghosh had triggered speculations. On April 4, EC had scrapped her post - Offer-in-Charge (Left Wing Extremism) - shifted her to CID.
The usually defiant Ghosh chose not to rile the EC further. On Thursday, a senior EC officer from New Delhi told TOI, "The EC action (against Ghosh) was not merely on uncorroborated and wild accusations by Opposition parties. There is some truth to it. The EC having put restrictions on her movement on election day, will keep a close watch on her actions on Thursday," he added. Ghosh was unavailable for comment through out the day.
The EC action against Ghosh, SS CID (Special), restraining her from stepping out of Kolkata on Thursday poll-day comes in wake of reports that she is taking refuge in her present CID role, has been touring - and meeting - police officers in some poll-bound districts. Earlier, it was alleged she had been to Jhargram on April 3 and then in Midnapore Police Lines on April 10.
