JHARGRAM: UAPA convict and Peoples' Committee against Police Atrocities leader Chhatradhar Mahato's wife Niyoti is likely to contest from Jhargram constituency as a Samajwadi Party candidate.
Niyoti campaigned for her jailed husband when he contested as a PCPA candidate from the seat in 2011, helping him secure over 20,000 votes. If Niyoti does take his place this time, she will formally enter the fray on Saturday, the last date for filing nominations for the April 11 polls in Jhargram.
Niyoti said SP leaders from Kolkata met her at home in Lalgarh's Amliya village four days ago and requested her to contest as their candidate from Jhargram.
They promised all help, including financial support, in her campaign. "I am considering the proposal to contest. If I do, erstwhile associates of my husband have assured help too," Niyoti said on Thursday.
Former state minister and SP MP Kiranmoy Nanda said, "I will reach Kolkata on Friday to discuss the issue."
Chhatradhar's lawyer Kaushik Sinha said, "I am making preparations for my client's wife to file her nomination after he gave his go-ahead to her entering the poll fray." Niyoti said, "I will try to fulfill my husband's wish for the Jangalmahal's development."
