3% rise in phase 2 poll turnout

KOLKATA: Chief election commissioner Nasim Zaidi during his brisk visit to the state had promised to check the sudden spike of polling percentage that was witnessed in the last phase of election. The commission adopted a series of measures to keep a tab on the alleged `ghost voters'.

But the final figures released by the commission in respect of the second phase of polling show that there has been a rise of around 3% in the voters' turnout compared to the provisional data given at 5 pm Sunday .

If one goes by the final polling percentage, only in Jalpaiguri there is a staggering rise of 8.54%. Till 5 pm on Sunday , Jalpaiguri recor ded a poll percentage of 77.69, but it increased to 86.23 in the final data released by the commission on Monday.This is followed by Darjeleing with an increase of 3.93% and South Dinajpur with a rise by 3.44%.

An official said, “Yesterday's figure was compiled at 5pm and voting ended one hour after that.“
