Kolkata: Two complaints have been registered with the Kolkata Police and one at New Delhi's Mandir Marg police station-Prakash Karat himself lodged the complaint in capital-against Trinamool MP Derek O'Brien over the morphing of Karat's image on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's face.
The Trinamool, however, chose to ignore the complaints, saying Derek had already apologised for the inadvertent error.
"I have lodged a complaint with the Delhi Police as morphing a photograph like the way it was done by a political party is an offence under cyber laws. I have requested the police to register an FIR," Karat told reporters after lodging a complaint at the Mandir Marg police station.
The controversy erupted after Derek at a press meet on Saturday played two videos of Rahul Gandhi's speeches and showed four photos, including one that showed BJP Union home minister Rajnath Singh offering sweet to CPM's former general secretary Karat. In no time, it transpired that the image was photoshopped in an attempt to show close links between the CPM and BJP. The BJP revealed the "oroginal photo", in which Singh is seen offering sweet to Modi and not Karat. The Trinamool later admitted the picture was photoshopped and removed it from its website. After the photo was released, Karat had said he had never met Rajnath on such a stage or a public function; the morphing smacked of political motives. The CPM followed it up in Kolkata by lodging a formal complaint with Kolkata commissioner Soumen Mitra on Sunday, seeking immediate action against Derek.
BJP state vice-president Joyprakash Majumdar who went to Lalbazar early on Sunday said, "What he did is a penal offence under both IPC and IT Act, 2008. But our specific complaint was against Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee and party national secretary Subrata Bakshi. For, when Derek started the meet on Saturday, he had said, on record, he was doing so at Mamata Banerjee's instructions. For us, it is part of a larger conspiracy." The BJP will move EC, seeking action against Trinamool for taking recourse to falsehood to defame a party. "They should be penalised," Majumdar said.
Cornered, Trinamool vice-president Mukul Roy-ironically Derek replaced him as the party's leader in Rajya Sabha-sprang to Derek's defence: "I have spoken to Derek. He apologised categorically yesterday. The picture was immediately removed. End of story."
