It will be an all-woman fight in RK Nagar, the constituency currently held by AIADMK leader and chief minister J Jayalalithaa, as the main parties have fielded women.

On Wednesday, VCK said it was fielding former Manonmaniam Sundaranar University vice-chancellor Vasanthi Devi as the candidate of the People’s Welfare Front-DMDK alliance. “Vasanthi Devi will contest on VCK’s ring symbol,” said party chief Thol Thirumavalavan. Also in the contest are DMK’s Shimla Muthuchozhan, a greenhorn but one with political pedigree, and PMK’s P Agnes, a social worker.

“We were allocated 25 constituencies by the PWF alliance, and we wanted eight general constituencies so that people like Vasanthi Devi could contest,” said Thirumavalavan.

Vasanthi Devi held the post of vice-chancellor of the university for two terms and has been a member of several research centres across India, said VCK leader Ravikumar. Thirumavalavan himself will contest from Katturmannarkoil constituency Cuddalore district. “Kattumannarkoil constituency has been supporting us for several years. In the 1996 general elections, I got more votes from this constituency when I was standing for the Chidambaram seat,” Thirumavalavan said.
