Erode: Pon. Chairman, DMDK candidate for East Erode constituency, campaigns for votes in a novel way.
A restaurant owner, who has been in the business for 30 years, Pon is attempting to woo voters with food, mainly snacks such as dosa, parotta and chapathi.
Fully aware of the power of food, he's confident that his tasty dishes will win the hearts of voters.
Pon. Chairman, native of Eral in Tuticorin district, settled in Erode district four decades ago. At the age of 14, he got his first job in a restaurant in Erode district. After learning the secrets of the trade, he started his own establishment on the Erode-Perundurai state highways 30 years ago.
Pon. Chairman is an MGR fan and joined DMK in the 1970s. When MGR left the DMK, he also left the party and joined the AIADMK. After MGR's death, he became a staunch supporter of Jayalalithaa. Subsequently, he joined the DMDK, right from the beginning, when Vijayakanth launched the party.
"I know everything there is to know about the restaurant business. I used to make parotta, chapathi and dosa and some popular south Indian snacks. Whenever they were short staffed, I would volunteer to work," said Chairman.
After he announced his candidacy for East Erode constituency, Pon. Chairman set some time aside for campaigning.
He begins his campaign at 6.30am daily and ends at 10.30am after which he goes to work and takes care of his business. Without taking a break, he starts campaigning at 3pm and goes on till 10pm. "Though I am very busy, I make sure I don't neglect my business. I come to work every day and plan for the next day," he said.
