CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu recorded 42.1% of voter turnout till 1pm, six hours after polling began in 232 booths on Monday. Chennai recorded 38% polling till 1pm.
Salem district has recorded the maximum polling of 52.08% till 1pm. In many districts in the south, it has been raining heavily and due to this polling has been sluggish. Kanyakumari district recorded 28%, the lowest in the state.
Parties have asked the Election Commission to extend the time of polling in rain-hit districts.
DMK was the first to seek extension of time. Later, the ruling AIADMK also wanted the EC to extend the time.
“We have received representations from the parties to extend the polling time. We will take a decision at 3pm,” chief electoral officer Rajesh Lakhoni told reporters.
People who would be standing in the queue even at 6pm would be allowed to cast their votes. Tokens would be issued to such voters, he added.
