Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday took the Choppergate controversy into the Congress camp and said the guilty, no matter how influential, must face trial. Addressing an election rally in Hosur, on the Tamil NaduKarnataka border, Modi, speaking in Hindi, dropped hints to suggest the involvement of Congress president Sonia Gandhi in the AgustaWestland VVIP chopper scam.
Modi asked the rally: “Do any of you have relatives in Italy? I don't have.
Neither have I been to Italy nor do I know Italians. Nonetheless, Italians have named some people in the scam. Should we not punish the guilty?“ Modi said election this time is to save Tamil Nadu from being sucked into a cesspool of corruption. He attacked DMK and its leader A Raja, allegedly involved in the 2G scam.
“The previous government was involved in a series of corrup tion cases. Many accused in the scam are from Tamil Nadu,“ he said.
Saying that BJP is a better option to DMK and AIADMK, Modi listed his government's social schemes to help the un derprivileged. “Be it Stand Up India, which offers loans to dalits and women, or Give Up India that helps women say goodbye to smoky chulhas, we have come to our people's rescue. We will bring such schemes to Tamil Nadu if you vote us to power,“ Modi told the rally.
He reminded the voters of his visit to Chennai when it was reeling under floods.
Thousands of people at the rally waited for an hour and braved rain to hear the Prime Minister speak. Modi's speech was translated by Munavar Begum, a party functionary.
