DMDK founder-leader Vijayakanth filed nomination papers from Ulundurpet constituency in Villupuram district on Wednesday. DMK candidate G R Vasanthavelu and PMK candidate K Balu also filed their nomination papers on the same day. AIADMK has fielded sitting MLA R Kumaraguru leading to a four cornered contest in the assembly segment.

Vijayakanth was elected from Rishivandiyam constituency in Villupuram district in the last assembly polls when his party faced polls in alliance with the AIADMK.

DMDK bagged 29 seats and Vijayakanth became the leader of the opposition. However, he lost the opposition leader status after nine of his party MLAs resigned. The DMDK leader contested his maiden polls from Vridhachalam constituency in Cuddalore district when his party faced the polls alone. He emerged as the lone victor for the party.
