CHENNAI: Chennai’s tweeple were at its creative best on Thursday with lots of one-liners and punchlines from movies doing the rounds as the AIADMK gained an early lead, upsetting exit poll predictions.
Among the ones with the most retweets was Rajinikanth's punchline from the 2007 film Sivaji, where the actor says "Singam single ah thaan varum; Panninga dhaan kootama varum." Punsters on Twitter reworded the same dialogue to make it "Singam (AIADMK) single ah thaan varum" and mocked the other alliances.
Another tweet alluded to the "No Money, No Money" song from 2011 film Vaanam. Criticising the "cash for votes" mentality of parties, jokes abounded that we are spending "crores of money to elect to power people who will loot crores of money."
"Kasu Pannam Thuttu Money Money" from 2011 film Soodhu Kavvum was another frequently referenced hit song for tweets at #TNElectionResults, which by 10.20 am crossed 21,800 tweets.
'Amma fans' saw a lot of puns with pictures of the table fans distributed by incumbent TN CM J Jayalalithaa juxtaposed against pictures of her (human) fans dancing in front of her residence at Poes Garden. The number of tweets with the hashtag #Amma crossed 7,350 by 10.30am, much ahead of other trending hashtags like #TNResults and #Verdict16. #TheMummyReturns, in reference to the Hollywood blockbuster, featuring popular actor Brendan Fraser, was also popular.
Also trending is #Kabali, with many tweeters saying that the next big question for Tamil Nadu was whether distribution rights for Rajinikanth starrer Kabali will go to Jaya TV or Sun TV. "The Nation Wants to Know: Jaya or Sun TV? #Kabali" was among the more popular tweets.
Commentators also said that if Sun TV and Kalaignar TV telecast their scheduled soap operas today afternoon, the EC need not bother counting votes as it will be a definite AIADMK win.
