CHENNAI: Overnight rain and overcast skies in the morning set the tone for polling in Chennai. Thundering clouds brought rainfall past midnight and voters woke up to a pleasant weather on Monday.
Voters chose to walk to the poll booths skipping the auto ride which would have been necessary on a regular summer day.
“During previous elections, we would wake up early and rush to the booths as early as 7am to avoid the heat.
This time, it turned out to be a fun outing,” said homemaker M Vatsala, a Mylapore resident.
At noon the temperature was below 30 degrees Celsius. The heat level peaked around 9.30am to about 33 degrees Celsius.
Chennai recorded only 1mm rainfall. Southern districts received moderate rainfall, recording a maximum of 39mm at Aduthurai in Thanjavur district. Thuvakudi in Trichy district recorded 23mm, Neyveli in Cuddalore 36mm and Paiyur in Krishnagiri 27mm. Rainfall is likely to intensify over Chennai and other northern coastal districts by Tuesday morning.
The Met department has forecast cloudy skies and possibility of rain the next few days.
