CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu BJP chief Tamilisai Soundararajan on Sunday night received a death threat through an SMS asking her to withdraw her nomination as a candidate in the Virugambakkam assembly constituency. Monday is the last day for withdrawal of nominations for the May 16 election.

A police official at the state BJP office told TOI that a man who identified himself as 'Alex' sent the SMS. The SMS in Tamil said a lorry would be used to run over Tamilisai's vehicle if she did not withdraw her nomination.

"The matter was reported to us only this morning and our efforts to trace the caller on his number failed as he had switched off the mobile," he said.

Efforts were on to identify the sender with the help of the service provider.

Party's national general secretary in-charge of Tamil Nadu, Murlidhar Rao, said the Election Commission should not take the threat lightly as BJP leaders had been killed in the state in the past.

"We demand an Election Commission of India-guided investigation into this threat," he told reporters.

A party meeting would discuss the issue of the need to provide security to BJP leaders contesting the election, he added.
