Sembedu village in Vellore, a bastion of Dravidian parties, is in the spotlight these days. One of its daughters played a decisive role in the evolution of the Captain Vijayakanth's Front. The village is proud of Premalatha, who hails from here, DMDK leader and the wife of the party's chief Vijayakanth. She was instrumental in forging the alliance between the DMDK and the PWF.
During a recent campaign meeting in the Fort city , she urged people to vote for Vellore's `maapillai'. But it may not be as easy as it sounds as the front will face a tough fight in the village against the heavyweights -AIADMK and DMK, which have a traditional vote bank.
“We are proud of Premalatha, who has emerged as a top political leader in the state. But many are affiliated to either DMK or AIADMK.They will never vote for any other parties,“ said a government school teacher in the village. A group of women agriculture labourers also echoed the same.
However, the youth beg to differ. Many want a change and they consider their `maapillai' Vijay akanth and Pre malatha as the “perfect leaders“ to bring the change they need.
A g roup of teenagers, most of them first-time voters, said, they like the confidence Vijayakanth exudes. “He never hesitates to speak what he thinks. He is known for his boldness. I am confident that he will implement good schemes for the development of the state and also eradicate the wide spread corruption in the state,“ said 22 year-old Tamilmaran.
