Chennai: The contest in RK Nagar seems to be getting more interesting with every passing day. A couple of days ago DMK chose to field a woman and a political greenhorn against AIADMK chief J Jayalalithaa. Now PMK too has fielded a woman — well educated but wet behind the ears when it comes to politics — against her. If VCK, a constituent of the DMDK-PWF front, also chooses to field a woman candidate, it’ll really be a fight to watch.
On Tuesday, PMK nominated its women’s wing secretary P Agnes as its candidate in RK Nagar here to take on chief minister and sitting MLA Jayalalithaa.
Last year, the AIADMK chief won the R K Nagar assembly by-election by a record margin after the Karnataka high court acquitted her in a disproportionate assets case.
Local MLA P Vetrivel resigned from the state assembly and made way for her in R K Nagar. Agnes told reporters that she “specifically requested RK Nagar, as I want to improve infrastructure in the constituency”. She pointed to the poor state of the roads and irregular water supply, before reiterating her party’s long-standing promise of prohibition.
