Salem: Celebrating the party's victory in the state assembly poll, a section of AIADMK workers on Thursday beat a Karunanidhi look-alike with slippers in full public view.
DMK workers have urged the Election Commission of India (ECI) and police officials to take action against the AIADMK cadres for their attempt at defaming the leader.
Sources said a group of AIADMK cadres gathered at the Government Engineering College in Karuppur, where the vote counting took place on Thursday.
They brought a person dressed-up like Karunanidhi and took him on a procession. Later, they abused him verbally and beat him with slippers. The AIADMK workers also asked the look-alike of Karunanidhi to "apologise" to J Jayalalithaa, by accepting his party's defeat in the poll. The AIADMK functionaries had carried with them a graffiti of Jayalalithaa and asked the look-alike to bow down before it.
They placed him on a stretcher like a dead body, and the party's women cadres paid "their last tributes" to him.
DMK cadres, who witnessed the incident, approached the police to stop the AIADMK functionaries but in vain. "We strongly condemned the incident and urge the ECI and police officials to initiate action against AIADMK cadres involved in the incident," said M Kaliyannan, a DMK functionary.
