Chennai: The ruling AIADMK has conveyed to the Election Commission that the cost of 100 units of free power ( 1,500 crore) promised in its manifesto could be met from the savings on account of fall in price of imported coal.
Following a representation from civil society, the EC had sought a response from AIADMK and DMK on source of funds for freebies. "Considering the overall annual budget of the state, the funds required for implementation of the schemes will be meagre. Further, the list of schemes, includes some ongoing schemes which will be continued and for which budgetary provision has already been made in the interim budget," said an EC official from New Delhi, quoting from the AIADMK's letter. The AIADMK has said the state's income is bound to increase as economy was growing and a new minerals policy will net additional revenue. Money for some schemes in the manifesto can come from Central schemes, it said.
The gift coupons of 500 for Pongal to every ration card holder was to ensure well-being of handloom weavers. Free mobile phones would enable people to reap the benefits of e-governance initiatives. The 50% subsidy for moped/scooter for women is designed for the welfare of women commuting for employment. The AIADMK said the DMK was trying to 'cheat' people by not explaining how it will fill the hole left by total prohibition.
