Thiruvananthapuram: AIADMK might not be a major political force in Kerala, but its candidate Biju Ramesh (51) is approaching voters with a promise that he will replicate all the welfare initiatives implemented by the Tamil Nadu government in Thiruvananthapuram, even Amma canteens that supply food at subsidised rates.
“We will give laptop for all girls who complete SSLC, free TV , fridge, washing machine and Rs 3 lakh for maintenance of houses,“ Biju said during his campaign in Thiruvananthapuram on Tuesday.Amma canteens in Tamil Nadu became a hit as they offer food at subsidised rates.
Biju, the whistle blower in the bar bribery case, is trying to translate his anti-corruption crusader image into votes this election. The liquor baron-turned-politician said: “I cannot begin the canteens now since the model code of conduct is in place. Hence it will reach your streets soon after polls,“ he said while addressing the 100-odd Tamil families at Chirakulam on Tuesday evening.
The hotelier, who had owned a dozen bars a year ago, hasn't taken a break from his interests in real estate and higher education sectors yet to launch a full-fledged campaign. He works in his office for a few hours each day before venturing out for campaigns.
When asked why he chose AIADMK, Biju said that he had been a member of the party for several years and it was ` Amma' who suggested his name this time. Biju said that he would try to eat into the UDF vote bank.
“I know it is a tough task, but I am contesting for a cause. I am contesting against the UDF government's corruption. I know who all made money in the current government,“ he said.
His hope is that the 38,000 voters of Tamil origin will support him along with hundreds of ordinary people who appreciated his fight against corruption.
“I am concentrating on those colonies where the poor people live. They know how political leaders went back on their promises over the years and I want to change that,“ he said.
