Guwahati: The Kamrup election district has begun campaigns in different places to increase voting percentage.
On Saturday, several initiatives were formally launched by deputy commissioner Vinod Seshan and the Election Commission's awareness observer Yogesh Baweja.
Among others, a 'polling station on wheels' was launched. "To spread information about voting and to create more awareness, a model polling station on wheels has been designed.
This station has a dummy presiding officer and polling officials. A mobile team, using a demo EVM, will show people how to cast vote," said Seshan.
The polling station will travel to areas known for their poor voter turnout. It will also be fitted with sound systems to play poll theme songs and appeals by the state's election icons - actor Adil Hussain and musician Sunita Khaund.
Apart from this, prominent disability rights activist Arman Ali and representatives of IIT-Guwahati have been designated campus ambassadors by the district administration. "We are thankful to Ali who has been of great help to us. They will visit colleges to motivate young voters so that the turnout can be increased. They are our campus ambassadors," added Seshan.
The election officials have selected 10% of every constituency with the lowest voting percentage. They will focus on these polling stations to increase the percentage at least by 5% to 10%.
On the occasion, a website of the district administration, myvotemyassam.com, was launched to help voters. "This platform will provide necessary information to voters. We have also organized online quiz competitions through this platform. Election-related queries will be answered which I think will increase awareness," said Seshan.
