Guwahati: Bollywood starlet and Republican Party of India-Athawale (RPI-A) leader Rakhi Sawant has expressed her desire to settle down in Assam and contest elections from here.
"I feel like settling down in Assam and fighting from here," said Rakhi, who arrived in Guwahati on Wednesday to campaign for her party's candidates.
Eradicating hunger and ushering in development are the biggest challenges for her party in Assam, she said.
"How can hungry people struggling to live shout Bharat Mata Ki Jai?" Rakhi asked.
Backing her party's candidates, she said only the poor can realize the pain of the poor. "A rich will never feel the pain of the poor," she said, criticizing political parties for giving tickets to wealthy people 'for money'.
"If Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata can grow as metro cities, why can't the cities of Assam? What's wrong here? Why do youths have to go outside Assam in search of jobs?" she wondered. She hit out at the ruling Congress in the state and accused the state government of not letting Assam advance.
Rakhi will be campaigning in several constituencies in lower Assam where minorities play a decisive role. The RPI-A, which fights for the rights of the Dalits in Maharashtra, will contest 21 seats in lower Assam which votes on April 11.
Rakhi said she is not power-hungry but wants to fight for the poor and the marginalized. She claimed that BJP had offered her a ticket from West Bengal in the 2014 Lok Sabha election, which she rejected.
"Let us make the impossible possible. Floods will not wreck havoc here, companies will make a beeline for Assam; just elect our candidates this election," she added.
