Laskar, a businessman by profession, defeated sitting MLA and Congress nominee Anamul Haq by a margin of 5,549 votes. While Aminul secured 42,206 votes, Anamul managed to get 36,657 votes.

An elated Aminul thanked the people of Sonai for supporting him and said voters belonging to both the Muslim and Hindu communities supported him. "The election was above communalism. I got overwhelming support from both Hindus and Muslims. Now the challenge is to justify the confidence people have shown in me," said Laskar.

In 2001, he had fought unsuccessfully from the Sonai seat on an AGP ticket. He joined BJP a couple of years ago and was promoted as its state committee secretary. He is a close aide of BJP's CM candidate Sarbananda Sanowal. Laskar said his job would be to develop the condition of roads, bridges and schools in Sonai and boost agriculture and irrigation there.
