Rushabh Shah explains how New Zealand was his natural laboratory as he studied Earth Engineering at University of Canterbury

Universities in New Zealand offer students the flexibility to pick from a variety of subjects to study; from the arts, sciences, engineering, or business. The institutions also bring on board several industry collaborators to help teach various modules. Students are even given the freedom to study a range of inter-departmental courses as electives.

These can allow you to gain unique skills that can set you apart from other graduates. This openness of conversation is a critical aspect of why New Zealand's students develop a strong level of critical thinking. It was these factors which made me decide on New Zealand as a study destination. This was after a long process of assessing several universities around the world. I finally settled on a programme that satisfied my own study and skill requirements at the University of Canterbury (UC).

As a student of earth science, New Zealand was for me a living laboratory to study in. It offered majestic and dynamic landscape as well as a peaceful environment. UC also provided state-of-the-art research laboratories with a unique blend of studies along with a host of extra-curricular activities.

Like everywhere else, initially, there were a few challenges in adapting to a new culture. During my period as a UC student, I also had to learn new ways of learning, with several varied styles of teaching being used. This included lectures, workshops, field works, project-based teamwork sessions, guest lectures by industry experts, and online learning modules. I was able to mix things up by participating in various interdepartmental workshops and training sessions. I also participated in several sports and recreational sessions as a stress buster - something that helped me socialise and bond with several fellow students. With a mix of cultures from across the globe, I was able to have plenty of insightful conversations with my peers. It helped me understand how differently individuals approach to solve problems.

UC organises frequent career fairs, volunteering initiatives and helps run several clubs for a variety of activities. The campus cafes, libraries, and sprawling parks became a part of my daily routine when I needed to study and relax in an open environment.

To help with expenses, students can take up part-time work opportunities, which are provided around the campus and in the city. Without too much adjustment to their courses, these jobs can help students sustain without disturbing their study calendar.
