Studying abroad in a foreign country can be a whole new experience. For Delhi boy Rahul Sharma, 30, pursuing PhD in Management, the prospect of overseas education was meant to be an exciting odyssey, and in that the Wesleyan University in Philippines did not disappoint. Life in the Philippines for Rahul may have been challenging, but the advantages of an international education seemed to have laid his worst fears to rest. "To begin with, you do not have the slightest idea about the general population, the language and you surely do not have a clue about your chosen destination.

The Philippines gives importance to education and has an impressive literacy rate of 93.9%," explains Rahul, who has postgraduate degrees in advertising and PR and another in marketing communication.

Rahul chose to pursue his PhD in the Philippines because it would give him "an international degree at an affordable price and exposure to the Philippine economy considered to be third the largest economy in the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations )".

His PhD, tailored to meet the demands of the global ASEAN markets includes a wide mix of foundation courses (comprising advanced business research, good governance and CSR), major courses (integrating risk management, leadership and corporate governance).

Campus life for him is always more than just academics and it helps that Wesleyan University offers more than 30 student-run clubs and activities, allowing students the chance to explore their interests. "For me, language has never been a barrier whether in the classroom or beyond since I studied in English medium throughout. Philippines is the third biggest English speaking nation in the world," Rahul says.

What he also finds appealing about the country is its unique cultural identity, frequently communicated through its varied island-to-island cuisine, an abundant selection of art galleries and historical centres, the ink of its traditional tribal tattoos and the shading and development of its road gatherings and celebrations.

"Aspirants wanting to opt for education in the Philippines will find it a great place to develop scientific writing and presentation skills," adds Rahul who credits his institution for the professional and personal networks that will help him when he sets up his own business in future.
