MUMBAI: In the backdrop of the
CBSE deciding to cancel the Class X examination, school education minister
Varsha Gaikwad
said the state too would study the option and consult experts about it.
Earlier this week, the state postponed the HSC and
SSC examination to May and June respectively in the wake of the growing Covid-19 cases in the state. The government had also written to the national and international education boards to reconsider their examination dates.
However, most parents and students said postponing the exams would only add to the uncertainty since one cannot forecast if things would have improved a month later. These groups had continued to demand that the
Maharashtra State Board of Secondary
and Higher Secondary Education consider promoting students on the basis of internal assessments.
“We understand that conducting examinations right now as Covid-19 cases are on the rise hence we decided to postpone them. Similarly, we wrote to the other boards to reconsider their dates too. The safety of the students and other stakeholders has been our top priority. Now that the CBSE has said it would promote its class X students based on internal assessment or objective criterion, we will study their option and speak to experts to understand its viability,” said Gaikwad.
On Wednesday, the CBSE announced that its class X board exams stand cancelled and the class XII board exams were cancelled for now and it would review the situation on June 1.
