Wanted: 6,000 teachers in India’s central universities

A little over 33% teaching positions and 37% non-teaching positions are vacant in central universities across India. As per official data, 15 of 44 central universities, including Delhi University, have over 40% of sanctioned teaching positions vacant. Sanctioned teaching positions are those for which approval has been granted but have not been filled. He also said that the data on posts lying vacant for more than three years wasn’t maintained by the ministry. What the data revealsAs per the data, over 6,000 of the 18,911 sanctioned teaching positions are lying vacant. Delhi University has the highest number of vacancies, with 846 of 1,706 sanctioned posts still open. The University of Allahabad has 598 of its 863 teaching posts lying vacant. medium84884259The data indicated that over 50% central universities (23 of 44) have over 30% vacancies. As per the data, over 13,700 (38%) of the 36,351 non-teaching positions in these universities are vacant.Rajib Ray, president of the Federation of Central University Teachers’ Association, said that the appointments in central universities over the last five years have not just been slow but non-transparent as well. “All we have been asking is that the ad-hoc teachers who have been teaching for a long time and are eligible should be made permanent on priority. The vacancies in the ST category was at 42.9%. The highest number of vacancies was in the OBC category (51.6%), with 5,142 posts lying vacant against a sanctioned strength of 9,960.Like this story?
