The University of Utah has secured a historic $75 million donation from the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation, which will be used to build a new hospital in West Valley City. The donation is part of a broader $855 million initiative to enhance healthcare access for over 725,000 residents in the area. This new facility, which will span 800,000 square feet, marks the first time in the university's 175-year history that an off-campus inpatient hospital will be constructed.
As reported by the University of Utah, the new health campus is expected to address health disparities in the region, which has higher rates of diseases like diabetes and heart-related illnesses and a lower life expectancy than other areas in the state.
Impact on West Valley City and surrounding communitiesThe project will feature approximately 100 hospital beds and a variety of outpatient clinics, including those for heart care, orthopedics, women’s health, pediatrics, internal medicine, and urgent care. The clinics are expected to serve more than 341,000 outpatient visits annually, providing essential healthcare services to underserved communities in the western part of the Salt Lake Valley. According to Taylor Randall, president of the University of Utah, “This groundbreaking investment continues the Eccles family’s extraordinary legacy of expanding healthcare access and education across Utah.”
A multi-million dollar initiative to increase healthcare accessThe $75 million donation will also help create over 2,000 new jobs in the West Valley area. Construction is set to begin in the summer of 2025, with the multi-specialty health clinic slated for completion in 2028 and the additional hospital rooms expected by 2029. Spencer F. Eccles, chairman and CEO of the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation, stated, “This hospital and health campus will become an indispensable community resource, a hub for superior healthcare, education, and expanded economic opportunity.”
The Eccles Foundation has a long history of supporting the University of Utah, including a $110 million donation in 2021 that helped establish the Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine. This latest gift continues that legacy, aiming to bring world-class medical care to the people of West Valley City and beyond.
